Everyone Can Do It, You Find a Way

For moms worried about whether they can homeschool, I’d love them to hear Molly’s story, in Molly's words.

"We just had a book sale and a conversation time at our coop, and we invited anyone who wanted to come and buy used books. And then we had these chat rooms where we had a few moms of different ages, you know more experienced homeschooling moms. So, there’s a panel of five or six experienced moms, and then there are five or six curious moms holding babies spread around the room. Each of the experienced moms introduce themselves, and then they ask if anyone has any questions about the different curriculums we use and our different circumstances. And so, one of the moms said well you all seem so well educated. And we all looked at each other and just laughed. Because some of us knew each other. And we knew like I have some college, but I don’t have any teaching degrees, or I don’t have any degrees. All of our education has come from homeschooling. I took the last twenty years explaining history and archeology and learning along with our kids, and as long as we’re one day ahead, we’re still one day ahead. And then what we don’t know, and we can’t catch up and they go right past us, we find somebody else to teach them. We said basically the education has come from the homeschooling. And the things that we don’t know, we will know. That’s why we read the books."

"At the same event there was a woman, she’s Chinese, and she’s an immigrant. She didn’t think she had good English. But she decided to homeschool her kids, and the first year was really a struggle till she and her children just decided to listen to audio books, in the car, everywhere. Audiobooks 24/7, and she said by the end of the year of audiobooks, her English was better, the children spoke better, the vocabulary learned was amazing, and they understood stories. She was so sweet, and I had never heard her say that many words together at the time. She is very quiet. And of course, her English isn’t that great. But she explained herself very well to those new moms and said everyone can do it. You’ll find a way."
